About Mirla G. Raz

I am an Arizona licensed speech pathologist and am certified by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. I have been in private practice for over 30 years working extensively with children who have speech and language problems. I received my Master’s degree from Seton Hall University in New Jersey. After graduation, I decided that I need sun and warmth and so headed south to work for the Volusia County Schools in Daytona Beach Florida. The next year I moved to California where I was offered a job working for the Los Angeles Unified School District in the severe oral language handicapped program. My next move was to UCLA where I worked in the department of Clinical Linguistics at the Neuropsychiatric Institute. In 1981, I moved to Arizona where I went into private practice. It gives me tremendous satisfaction to know that I have helped hundreds of children gain normal speech and language skills.

"Apps: An Emerging Tool for SLPs" by Jessica Gosnell, MS, CCC-SLP, in the latest issue of the ASHA leader, discusses apps and their use in our field. One of the points she makes is that speech apps should not take the place of an SLP. She may be correct, for now. There is no doubt [...]

Minimal Pairs App

2017-12-10T19:35:39+00:00

Minimal Pairs by SLP Tech Tools has a number of features I like. It allows for the tracking of up to 75 clients. Once you input the client's name and grade, the date, time, process targeted and the total correct/ incorrect, scores are tracked for each client for each session. All of this information is [...]

Technology is here to stay and kids today are the "digital natives". We "digital immigrants" need to dive in and learn all that we can if we want to keep relevant to the children we teach. Much like how I need to know about Phineas and Ferb, Pokemon, ninjago and figits. We have to use [...]

Does technology inhibit our engagement with children?

2017-12-10T19:35:39+00:00

I had an interesting online discussion with a colleague as to whether or not technology detracts from or enhances communication. She wrote, "...communication is a relational activity, it's all about relationships. Should we be investing so much energy on encouraging children to engage maybe more with technology than they do with people? ... Do we [...]

How effective is the iPad as a therapy tool?

2011-09-19T15:33:00+00:00

Children love the iPad and are masters at knowing what to touch, how to touch, move, or activate whatever is on the screen. Their abilities with the iPad and other technologies does not necessarily translate into a learning experience. Therein lies the problem. I have observed children as they use technology and have noticed that, [...]

Well put, Lexical linguist. This is a learning process, similar to writing then publishing a book. I decided to self-publish the Help Me Talk Right books and I'm happy I did. I'll admit that it was scary at first. It seemed that publishing was only what big knowledgeable companies did. How could one person like [...]
