About Mirla G. Raz

I am an Arizona licensed speech pathologist and am certified by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. I have been in private practice for over 30 years working extensively with children who have speech and language problems. I received my Master’s degree from Seton Hall University in New Jersey. After graduation, I decided that I need sun and warmth and so headed south to work for the Volusia County Schools in Daytona Beach Florida. The next year I moved to California where I was offered a job working for the Los Angeles Unified School District in the severe oral language handicapped program. My next move was to UCLA where I worked in the department of Clinical Linguistics at the Neuropsychiatric Institute. In 1981, I moved to Arizona where I went into private practice. It gives me tremendous satisfaction to know that I have helped hundreds of children gain normal speech and language skills.

Hi Mirla. Heard about your blog from a friend of mine who developed Brain-Go. I wanted to let you know about my app MouthWorks. It is an animated app designed to help children with their speech production. The highlight of the app is that each mouth posture, sound, and word (CV or CVC) is modeled [...]

Language Adaptable Apps

2017-12-10T19:35:38+00:00

There are a lot of apps that I've put into the general category of language. These are apps that can be used to work on areas such as vocabulary, prepositions, descriptives, actions, sequencing and answering questions. Since I have so many, I'll briefly describe the apps and for what language target I would use them. [...]

Managing All Those Apps

2017-12-10T19:35:39+00:00

Once one starts collecting apps, as I have, categorizing them becomes a necessity. Most of my professional apps fit into the language and muli-use categories. It won't be too long before I start pulling apps out of those categories and giving them more specific names, especially for the language, vocabulary and multiple uses categories. So [...]

Hi Mirla,I wonder if you can put the apps into categories. A colleague just e-mailed the SLPs in our district, asking about appropriate apps for a 5th grade student to use for /r/ practice at home. Any special ideas?

Sticker Apps One Can Adapt for Language Therapy

2017-12-10T19:35:39+00:00

Because there are few language therapy dedicated apps, one needs to look for apps that can be adapted to one's language goals. I've found a number of such apps. What I will try to do in my upcoming posts, is highlight these apps and talk about how they can be used in language therapy. There are [...]

My app Is SpeechStickers and is a practice app for non-verbal & minimally verbal kids (mostly with childhood apraxia of speech). Our first version has consonants /m,p,b/ and 5 basic vowels but we are about to put out an update with /t,d,k,g,s,sh,n/. I'm always thinking of great app ideas but since we are all "evening [...]

Another app for associations

2017-12-10T19:35:39+00:00

I posted blog on December 26, 2011 about apps we can use for associations. The other day I downloaded a new app that fits into that category---Things That Go Together. The pictures are clear and nicely laid out. One moves the picture on the left to fit into the corresponding empty box next to its [...]
